Tips and Tricks
The Oceano County Airport is located just a few minutes walk from some of the most beautiful coastline in California. Flying into Oceano County Airport (L52) offers an unforgettable experience for a quick weekend getaway. Overnight accommodations are made easy with the airport’s onsite campground as well as close proximity to a variety of local vacation property rentals, many of which are located directly on the beach. L52 allows camping right next to your plane if you bring a lightweight tent and camping gear to enjoy the unique experience of sleeping under the stars near the runway.
With easy access to the Pismo Beach dunes, you can walk the beach and enjoy ATV riding, Hummer tours of the dunes, swimming in the ocean, a beach bonfire or simply relaxing on the beach sand. Playgrounds are accessible directly across the road from the airport exit and campsites. Pismo State Beach is dog-friendly so long as your pup is leashed, so feel free to bring along your furry friends! Unique experiences for scenic tours and aerobatics are offered by Banner Airways in a 1942 STEARMAN, 1975 PITTS S-2A, or 1956 T-6/SNJ-4. Whether you’re seeking a weekend of solitude or a chance to meet other pilots, this stop offers a lot of fun.
While Oceano is a small town, there are nearby restaurants and convenient stores to stock up on last-minute items for your trip. The highly rated Slappy’s Chowder House is located right on the beach and walkable from the airport. Although because the airport has limited services we do recommend packing all necessary gear along with some food and water before arrival. Clever Hiker’s lightweight camping gear recommendations is a resource if you’re looking for weight and balance approved camping gear for a small aircraft.
As always, make sure you’re familiar and comfortable with the airport conditions. L52 is a non-towered airport with one relatively short runway. Oceano’s coastal climate can bring morning fog, so check the weather and plan your flights accordingly to avoid delays. Costal winds may play a factor. Always check the performance factors on your plane.
